Thoughts on using a song with audience applause in it? Is there a way to shape the vid so the applause does not seem like the vidder giving it to themself, but rather as another element of the instrumental part of the song? Has anyone used a song with applause? I seem to recall [personal profile] sweetestdrain did for a vid, but the exact one eludes me.

I think applause could be incorporated into a comedy vid (and, again, I'm pretty sure it has been...The Man Song vid for the Sentinel, maybe?), but what about a serious bizness vid? Is it too disruptive?

EVEN THOUGH I have not answered comments on my last, like, 6 posts (I'M SORRY), I want to talk about vidding today so I'm posting again. Choosing what I'm actually going to make for my VVC premiere has put a few thoughts in my head about VVC premiere vid selection.

Here's the thing: I know the VVC concom in their hearts truly wants us to just submit whatever vid we want. But as a vidder, the opportunity to have a brand new vid have its first showing before an essentially captive audience is pretty special, so I want to put my best vid foot forward here. Having been to VVC many times now, I know that a lot of different types of vids play well there, because the audience is prepped to enjoy them. I don't have to pick my angstiest vid or my smartest vid or my meta vid. But as I sat and looked at the vids I really wanted to make for VVC premiere this year, none of them were fluffy ship vids. And maybe that's just me and my headspace right now: the things I'm actively shipping I don't have any songs for. But what it feels like, when I tease the real reason out, is that I want to make a vid that's going to get an explosive response. I'm not the only one, right? I find I'm basically NEVER the only one, so let's be real here, vidders: don't you want your vid to be one of The Vids of Vividcon Premieres? Don't you secretly hope you'll get the opening or closing spots in the show? Don't you make your Premiere vid selection based on that at least a LITTLE?

(BTW: number of times this has actually worked for me is 0, so I'm not saying it's a great way to go. I'm just being honest. *g*)

THAT BEING SAID, what's ultimately going to drive my vid selection this year - as with every year really - is what I have the right time and most interest in. It's a tricky alchemical mix to figure out which vid that's going to be (especially when I also personally don't want to make a super downer vid this year), but I think I settled on it finally. I found the perfect song for a source that is small enough to be workable for me and I can feel myself getting excited about it. I'm listening to the song over and over, imagining the vid in my head as I do. I even gave myself chills! Always a good sign. Hee.

Shoot, I had another vidding thing I wanted to talk about...what was it, what was it...I can't remember. If it comes back to me, I'll post again. Twice in one day! WHAAAAAAAT.

In the meantime: How's your vid selection going? What shows do you think you're going to submit to this year? Anybody working on any non-VVC vids they want to chat about?

I am going to Vividcon this year (typing this out so that fate has to keep up her end of the bargain and not throw some wrench in the gears: YOU LISTENING, FATE?) and I've determined that I'm gonna make a vid for Premieres for the first time since 2007. I double-checked and my last premiere vid was "The Loyal," my Children of Men vid. I've done CV vids since then, but that's still not since like 2011 I think. SO. This year: going to VVC, making a Premiere vid.

Now comes maybe my favorite part of vidding, because it's the most joyful with least complications, and that's listening to my Vidsongs playlist (187 songs and growing) and picking the one I want to make. I've gotten excited about several already, including a Buffy vid idea I've had for at least seven years, if not ten, that I've put off because I didn't feel ready to tackle it but I feel like I am now. The clipping, though, is gonna be a nightmare. So I'm making a mini list of possibilities and I hope to start working on whatever it is in the next week or so. Yay vidding! It's a terrible hobby only 95% of the time!

(On a related note, though, I watched a bunch of my pre-2009 vids and I actually really enjoyed them and didn't want to change anything. It was weird! But great! I used to be a good vidder, so surely that person is still inside of me. Hee.)

While looking through my vidding stuff, I also came across this brief due South Ray/Ray snippet I'd started a few years ago that I am never gonna finish but I thought the beginning was cute and I'm gonna delete the draft email it's been stored in so I'm putting it here for posterity.

Under the cutCollapse )

1. I missed reading LJ/DW the most, interestingly. I couldn't wait to come back and see what everybody was up to on More Joy Day and today.

2. I missed posting to Twitter the most, though, which I chalk up to the instant gratification of having tweets recognized plus the ease of just having to come up with a sentence or two for a complete entry. I had SO MANY tweets flit through my head, even though I didn't post (most of) them.

3. I basically did not miss Facebook at all, except to keep up with my beloved friend N. Not sure what I'm going to do about FB going forward.

4. I did NOT end up awash in sudden free time, which was a surprise, honestly. Part of that is because work has been hellishly busy the entire month and swelled to fill the space. Part of that is because it turns out I had a ton of shit to do in a regular day anyway! Part of it is because I do so much of my social media via my phone when I'm putting Puptoo to sleep that I can't really do much else then anyway. And part of it is because I did actually clean up my backlog of Firefox tabs AND worked on my Selfie vid when I would normally waste time on social media. Though the vid was a HUGE NIGHTMARE of technical issues that it literally MADE ME CRY from frustration. BUT IT'S DONE, SO NYAH TECH ISSUES.

And thank you all for the lovely comments on my vid. <3

Anyway, hiatus over! Things I managed to accomplish that I set out to do: meditated on/developed a 1-5-10-25 year life goal list that gave me some actionable directions to go; finished my Selfie vid; played and finished the video game I got for Christmas, Journey (which was visually stunning and emotionally rather complex for such a technically straightforward game); and fell thoroughly in love with Galavant. omg Galavant! Yet another short-order show that is doomed to not be renewed! Between this, and Selfie, and Parks & Rec on its final season, and Sleepy Hollow being so droopy, me and TV are on the outs these days, y'all.

Though to be fair I have actually enjoyed the first few eps of the second half of Sleepy Hollow's season. Comments for the last one about HawleyCollapse )

I look forward to being on Twitter for the Super Bowl today, though, I will admit. Go 'Hawks!

This is the first vid I've made for myself since August 2012. After battling epic technical issues, if you thought I was going to get this close to having it done and not post it, even with Festivids breathing down its neck, you were sadly mistaken. At least now you have something to do while you wait for the Festivids list?

Title: This Is What It Feels Like
Fandom: Selfie
Song: Armin van Buuren feat. Trevor Guthrie, "This Is What It Feels Like"
Spoilers: For the whole show

Summary: I can't make it to the shore without your light

Warnings: Some mild strobing (as used in the show at one point) and back-and-forth intercutting smattered about.

A/N: Thank you to belmanoir for a really astute review of the initial draft. And thanks to mrs_laugh_track and goodbyebird for unflagging enthusiasm for both the show and the vid as I nearly drowned in the Swamps of Despair.

Download the vid here (right-click, save target as; 163 MB - if you want a smaller version, please let me know! I figured nobody downloads vids anymore so I might as well offer the best quality possible to anyone who actually does) or stream it at YouTube here.

Hello! Hi! Welcome everyone to the EIGHTH annual More Joy Day!

The goal of today is for us to seek out and give joy to others, in the hopes that it will expand outward into the world. We're kicking off the year with joy in the hopes of beginning as we mean to end. Now more than ever do we need to fill our cups with kindness yet, even if just for a day. Here is this year's post where I describe the inspiration and intent behind More Joy Day.

The ultimate goal is to do just one joy-filled thing for someone(s) today; either something small, like letting someone in front of you in line or in traffic, or something big, like writing a fic or making a vid or buying a new couch for someone (who knows, it could happen). The smallest amount of joy helps, and is a kindness that wasn't there when you started. Online OR offline counts! Whatever you can manage. You're further encouraged to then post about it and comment here with your link for further joy-sharing.

So! Comment away - and I'll post again later with my own contribution. And you're welcome to link to this post. Happy More Joy Day to you all!

More Joy Day is next Thursday, January 15!

I started More Joy Day back in 2008, because 2007 had been a particularly bad year for my friends and myself and I wanted to press the reset button on 2008 in a firm but positive way. You all jumped onboard and made More Joy Day work with your enthusiasm and participation, and I'm so grateful that you did, because it was that tidal wave of joy we put out in the world in 2008 that has fueled More Joy Day every year since then.

This bit from one of Jacob's American Idol recaps on the late Television Without Pity site is what spurred MJ Day:

Some dick cuts you off on the highway, and you give yourself the pass to be a dick to the next five customers, and your bad mood fades by lunchtime, and you forget the dick on the highway, you forget the color of his car, you forget how he was on the phone with his ex-wife, yelling about custody of their kids, and how he never meant to cut you off in the first place, he was just distracted. Your day continues as planned, and at lunch you check your websites and read a funny recap, and you maybe laugh out loud, and you go home and watch TV. But those five guys give themselves the pass to be dicks to the next five -- they're having a bad day, so it's okay just this once, and they're happy again by lunch -- and those twenty-five become six hundred twenty-five, and those six twenty-five become a million, and you've added to the sum total of anger in the world. But it works with love, too, and kindness. ... Your donation is something tangible, but what it means is something altogether more powerful, and it's that you continue to stand, and you continue to remember that you're not alone, and with reverence for this fact, you can't help but add to joy. Which is your entire job, from the day you're born until the day you die: more joy.

Well it's January again, and 2014 seemed to be a real kick-in-the-ass globally. Let's kick it back hard with a day shining out with joy, shall we?

Remember, even a small act is all that's needed. A call to a friend you haven't talked to in awhile, flowers for a neighbor, letting someone in front of you in line, leaving a happy comment on someone's fic or vid or podcast or graphic, sharing a pic!spam of joyful moments on your journal, giving someone a compliment, planting a tree, or taking a moment to smile at someone else as you walk by them. It doesn't have to be expensive or complex, but whatever it is, I love to hear about it, so I'll do my annual post here for you to tell us what act you performed, and then we can expand the impact of your joy by vicariously living through your telling! It's a win-win! :)

See you here (or Twitter, or Tumblr) next Thursday!

This social media hiatus has been excellent so far: I FINISHED MY SELFIE VID.

I need a beta, though, preferably someone familiar with the show since it's a FEELINGS vid, not a pimping vid. I'm looking for general cohesiveness & impressions review, as well as any mis-timed moments, etc.

Do any of you meet that criteria that might be able to take a look at it for me soon? There are some technical things I need to fix but it'll be ready to go for review by tomorrow at the latest. If you are able/interested, please email me? sdwolfpup (at) gmail (dot) com. Thank you!!

Hope you're all having a lovely new year so far. I'll post again later this week with a More Joy Day reminder!

And summarily broken it by ending after 13 beautiful episodes.

Talk about the finale plus general thoughts about the showCollapse )

I once again am chosen by a fandom that causes me both great joy and grief. THANKS, FANDOM.

(Speaking of fandom, we finally started watching Pacific Rim during lunch today. It's super good, y'all were right about that! However, ol whatisname, the blonde guy, is clearly the hero so far, not Mako. I love you fandom, but sometimes I think you see things that aren't really there. Still: enjoying it!)

ANYWAY: Selfie. It''s pretty great? I give it two paws up.

First Reminder: I'm going on social media hiatus until Feb 1! I miss y'all already. Don't go away while I'm on break, okay? I want to share my month with you when I return! Also if you need anything, email me. Also if you suddenly get into Selfie, then DEFINITELY email me. Hee. I will be answering any comments that I have outstanding, so feel free to comment here knowing I'll actually make time to answer them for once. Other fannish plans for the break: finishing this Selfie baby fic, my Selfie vid, maybe finally my Seth/Amy punk bank AU, reading through all my open tabs, and other stuff. Big dreams, we'll see what actually happens.

Second Reminder: More Joy Day is January 15! I'll post again the week before, though I won't be reading LJ/DW.

HAPPY NEW YEAR to all of you. I think on the whole we're all ready for 2014 to be done right? I mean, wow. This year. *hands* Take care of yourselves.

We just sent off our last house guest and though I have to jump back into the buttloads of work I have to do, I wanted to take a few minutes to offload a few items before the end of the year!

1.) Most important: More Joy Day is returning again in 2015! (Click the previous link to see what it's all about.) It's a little later than usual to give all of us time to get our feet under us and make it a grand day. This year it will be January 15, 2015. Can you believe this will be our EIGHTH year doing this? Holy smokes.

2.) I loved the Legend of Korra finale so much. For anyone who dropped off after seasons 1 or 2, jump back on for seasons 3 or 4. The show continued to grow in quality all the way through the end, and the finale was (mostly) satisfying. Spoilery!!Collapse )

3.) Tomorrow is the LAST EVER Selfie. I'M NOT OKAY. All I want (if I can't have more of the show) is make-outs and I'm just really not feeling like we're going to get them. What a loss. However I am reading and learning a ton about Pygmalion, so don't say fandom never taught ya nothing.

4.) I have a BUNCH of Yuletide fic tabs open thanks to everybody's recs! So far I've read all three Selfie fics (liked them all, but the road trip one was my favorite) and a Brooklyn 99 fic that was so spot-on in voices it was almost kind of creepy (the elf on the shelf one). Hee. But I loved it. I rec'd it on Twitter, which is still my primary social media contact these days since it's easiest to do from my phone (more on social media at the end of this post, actually).

5.) Waving the "YOU CAN DO IT" flag for all Festivids participants! I'm eagerly awaiting all of the vids y'all are making!

6.) Though it will not be very noticeable here on LJ/DW, I am taking a social media break in January. No Twitter, Facebook, LJ/DW, or Tumblr. I'm feeling a little addicted lately, and more significantly, I'm feeling like I'm using up time I want to be spending in other ways because it's so easy (and fun!) to just hang out on social media and have a constant incoming stream of information. My goal for the month is to vid (I got NO VIDDING TIME during this holiday break, when I had banked on getting a bunch, so I'm especially itching for this), to work on my photography, and to do some thinking about my life to get it back under my control instead of just coasting along. The new year is motivating to me and I'm going to capitalize on it.

I will still be checking email daily (I'm not a monk), so if you need something or just want to say hello, you can email me! sdwolfpup (at) gmail (dot) com . I'll also receive alerts from FB and Twitter and Tumblr if you'd rather contact me that way or share a link or something for February. I'll also be around on 15 January for More Joy Day, of course!

My only concern with this social media shutdown is that I work from home and often social media is the only real socializing I get during the whole week, so if I find it too isolating to be cut off completely, I may set up a system where I come online for 30-60 minutes once a day or something. But we'll see. I have high hopes of doing the following during this month:

- Getting my focus back for work
- Completing my Selfie vid (which I will go online to post if I finish)
- Finally going through my outstanding photos since July to post to my photo tumblr (tjgphotos)
- Finally taking the Photography 101 course I signed up for LAST January
- Making a 1-5-10 year list of things I'd like to do professionally and personally, so that I can start actively planning towards the things I want most

I think that's enough to pack into a month. I hope it works. I will report back in February on what I actually managed to complete, and hopefully that will help keep me at it, too.

Motivation is tough.

If I don't make it back to LJ/DW before January 1st, I wish you all the best this new year! Thank you for being here as you have been for 10+ years now for me. I love LJ/DW still, even if I'm not as active here as I was. It feels more like home than anywhere else, and I'd miss it if it (and you!) were gone entirely.

I have a theory (it may be bunnies): Glen Campbell's cover of "These Days" and Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt" are two sides of the same thematic coin. Both are end-of-your-life musings, but JC's is quite a lot darker than the Jackson Browne-written, Glen Campbell-performed "These Days."

It's just a thought.

If I were doing that wishlist meme - which I am not, because I know I can't fulfill anyone else's - it would essentially boil down to the following:

1. Free time for finishing my Selfie vid that I've somehow managed to get 1:30 of done in the midst of travel, work, and holiday stuff, but have not been able to get any more of because I'm somehow even busier than I was.

3. A second season for Selfie, contingent on how the remaining eps fall out (bc honestly if there are makeouts, I can let the show rest peacefully knowing I got what I wanted out of it, ultimately).

4. Sleepy Hollow to get rid of Hawley, undo the death I heard about from the mid-season finale (I haven't watched the last two episodes of SH yet, which says a lot about how I feel about SH right now), give Abbie way more spotlight, and get Katrina and Abraham together in evil matrimony.

5. Time to finish a couple of other vids I super duper want to do both for myself and for other people who I know would enjoy them. At least two of which I've even started.

6. Someone to write me ALL the Selfie AUs (Selfie as Die Hard! Selfie pirates! Selfie on Mars!)

7. Time to organize my photos so I can finish Puptoo's 15 month post. She's walking now! She started the first weekend of November and basically hasn't stopped.

8. For Korra to keep being as amazing as it has been this season as it heads into the last episodes. I am so impressed by the continued growth and maturity of this show. Just please please please don't make Korra/Mako endgame. Stop trying to make Korra/Mako happen, writers! No one wants that!

9. John Cho to be given as many romantic lead roles as he wants in movies or TV. Wherever I can see his perfect face.

10. For all of you to get what you most want this holiday season, whatever that may be. <3 (Unless it's Korra/Mako. I'm not a saint.)

I only post this here to give you a sense of where I am fannishly these days. It's been too long since I posted, but I'm reading! And also vidding, when I can.

ETA: Problem solved. Y'ALL ROCK. \o/

I apparently have been bit - hard - by the Selfie bug, enough that I'm getting vid ideas that are giving me strong Vid Now itches. (I was working on a Firefly vid, but then I watched a Firefly vid that is about pretty much the same thing - I KNOW, I REGRET IT - and now I don't really want to make mine because it feels pointless, and my vidding confidence is at an all-time low right now after what I consider a fairly disastrous last vid (that Brooklyn Nine Nine vid should've been so much better than it was, sigh), so I need a strong showing to get back on the horse. I will go back to my other vid someday, I just can't even look at it right now. Such a bad move on my part. I don't know what I was thinking.)

WHAT I'M SAYING is: my usual channels for currently airing source are totally dry for Selfie. Can anyone help me? *bats eyelashes at you* I'd offer you something in exchange but honestly I can barely keep my life under control as it is.

Yes, posting this on the day it's announced that Selfie is being canceled feels kind of like masochism.

HELLO WORLD. Though today is a day for massive Amy Poehler-based flailing (her book is out!), I'm going to throw you off pace and instead I'm here to proselytize to you a bit about one Mr. Peter Mulvey.

He played at The Royal Room in Seattle Sunday night and the stars aligned and my children went to sleep for the babysitter and so AHH and I had a date (!!) and got to see him. It's been awhile since I've been to/talked about a concert here, but the show reminded me why I feel like everyone needs to see at least one Peter Mulvey performance in their life.

I shall expand on that more under hereCollapse )

But yes, if you get a chance, even if you haven't heard his songs or you've heard them recorded only and they haven't made a huge impression on you, you should try to get to one of his shows. He understands the magic of live shows and capitalizes on it every time.

And seriously - ask him to play that Over Coffee song.

There is too much, I will sum up:

Since last we spoke in beginning of August we have gone camping up at Mt. St. Helens (surprisingly successful!); I started and then stalled on a Firefly vid; we had Puplet's fifth birthday party; had family visit; celebrated three birthdays in four days; had Puplet start (and love, and then HATE) kindergarten; had Puptoo start daycare (hate, all the time); continued to work full-time; continued to have a baby who hates sleeping; have already had Puptoo get sick three times from daycare; flew on a whirlwind trip to Denver with brynnmck to see Seth Meyers perform; and got a dog!

You get pictures of the dog! Which, if you follow me on Twitter, you have already seen, sorryCollapse )

And now you are all caught up!

I, however, continue to be behind. I haven't even STARTED Puplet OR Puptoo's 5-yr and 1-yr posts, respectively. I have a ton of pictures I want to re-size and post to my photo tumblr. I want to get back to my Firefly vid. I want to finish my Seth/Amy punk rock AU. Plus work, school, and family obligations. So fall TV season has started and as I said on Twitter, I am already behind and have given up. I think I'm going to skip Festivids this year and instead spend that time finishing a vid for me, but we'll see. I always get caught up in the frenzy of it. Hee. If you want to keep up with me on a regular basis, I'm basically all Twitter, all the time right now (@sdwolfpup) because it's easiest to do on my phone. I abandoned tumblr for like a month straight but I'm occasionally dipping in there again (ajoblotofjunk). And I'm reading here but having trouble commenting because the LJ app for my phone is terrible. But I like seeing y'all here! Please keep posting and I will try to comment more, I promise!

Here's a random fact about me: I really really love the Year With Frog and Toad soundtrack. I'll listen to it without Puplet around.

Even though I am probably the least well-read person my flist and thus usually avoid doing book-related memes because I'm weirdly kind of embarrassed to talk about it around y'all, I'm gonna do this one because it's been way too long since I posted. I have unanswered comments but I'm throwing caution to the wind! Plus it's VVC weekend so I need something fun to do. :)

Puptoo update: she stood up unassisted yesterday from a sitting position. O.o We suspect walking is imminent. She's certainly climbing enough to keep us super duper busy.

The sanest lunatic you've ever met

As of tomorrow (thanks, LJ, for being my diary so I could be exact on that!), we have lived in Seattle for TEN YEARS. We moved up so AHH could go to school, and we have planned to move back to San Diego immediately upon his graduation. But we fell in love with the area, found a community, and are here well past our initial expiration date. :)

I spent a huge chunk of my life in San Diego, and it will always have part of my heart. It's where I grew up, went to college, got married, got my first "real" job, and where my family is, and it's an important part of who I am, and always will be. But Seattle has been where I really matured as an adult, where we had kids of our own, and where we've grown roots. Moving out of San Diego helped me discover the joy of actual seasons (even if they're mild ones to most of you, they're very significant to me), how much I love kayaking, and how great it is to have a state park seemingly around every corner.

In honor of my ten year Seattle-versary, here are Ten Things I Didn't Know I Loved About Seattle Until I Lived Here!

1. When it's a nice day, people say "the mountain's out!" Truly one of my favorite things about living here.

2. Speaking of the mountain: Mount Rainier is so beautiful. Yeah, yeah, active volcano. It's GORGEOUS though.

3. Speaking of nice days - they nice days here are stunning. My word, it is hard to beat the bright green evergreen trees against the deep blue summer skies.

4. I also love how Seattlites swarm outside when there is the slightest hint of good weather. We really appreciate our sunny days up here.

5. There are parks everywhere. Playgrounds, hiking, wide open fields, shoreline, you name it, there is a park for it, and it's probably not even that far away.

6. brynnmck. ♥ Our first meet-up was at the downtown Seattle library. We have never been back, at least together. Hee.

7. The fandom community in general here is so great. I have met so many truly wonderful Seattle (and ex-Seattle!) fans. Plus there's a good support for larger fandom here - Emerald City Comic Con, Geek Girl Con, the Science Fiction & Fantasy Museum. And PacifiCon, of course!

8. The Tractor Tavern, one of my favorite music venues with one of the best bathrooms for interesting graffiti. Although I get lost every single time I drive there.

9. How beautiful everything looks in the freshly fallen snow is. Snow is super problematic here because of all the hills and our total lack of general experience with it, but when it's the morning after a snowfall, and everything is still clean and smooth, it's so peaceful and glittery.

10. How liberal it skews, from it's LGBTQ-friendly nature to its commitment to nature conservation. The older I get, the more socially liberal I've become, and Seattle is a great place for that.

Thanks, Seattle, for being you. I can't wait to be here another 10 years.
