New vid! - "A Day Like Today" (BSG)
I made this vid for [info]nyuszi for the Lee-and-Laura Fixathon!

[info]nyuszi, I know it's not one of the songs you suggested, but it does have meaningful lyrics, which was one of your requirements. :) I also tried a bit to match the mood of the fic you asked for, so it's 'shippy and serious. I hope you enjoy it!

Title: A Day Like Today
Song: Tom McRae, "A Day Like Today"
Spoilers: Through "Home" part 2
Summary: All I ever say, and all I ever do, is just a message to you
Download: DivX AVI (32 MB) (right click, save target as to download)

Lyrics
"Welcome back"
says the voice on the radio
But I never left
I was always right here

In your hand, all the colors
you thought were kings
At the turn of a card
can just disappear

I wish I could comfort you
if love is our defense
It's all right I can comfort you
if you let me, I could love you to death

Need to see
need to say
need to be
something beautiful
I can't get today
out of my mind

Need to say
need to call
need to love
someone beautiful
A day like today
has stained my eyes

All I ever say
and all I ever do
is just a message to you
all I ever play
are the cards you gave me
it's just my version of the truth

All I ever say
and all I ever do
is just a message to you
all I ever play
are the cards you gave me
it's just my version of the truth

I wish I could comfort you
If love is our defense
it's alright I can comfort you
If you let me, I could love you to death
If you let me, I could love you to death

Many thanks to [info]brynnmck, [info]fer1213, [info]k_julia, and [info]sockkpuppett for excellent advice and suggestions and many thinky thoughts that helped me realize what I was trying to do and how I was trying to do it. Thanks for telling me where I failed and where I succeeded and always driving me towards a better vid. I am, as always, incredibly grateful for my betas' input.

All feedback, comments, or concrit are welcome.

Okay, first of all, big love for Tom McRae. Secondly, your use of this song for Lee/Laura is fascinating. I loved it and I do not love Lee/Laura, so this is huge for me. I'm really in love with this vid. I must go add it to my pimpage from earlier.

Thank you for giving it a chance even though you aren't a Lee/Laura fan! And I'm especially glad to hear that it worked for you anyway. Thank you for the comment and the pimpage!

Yay! New vid from you. Am looking forward to it!!

But oh noes!!! I was going to start vidding this very song really soon for Witchblade. Arg. This is the third time in the past half year this has happened to me. I'm doomed.

But... new vid from you!

You're not the only one.
The auction vid I just finished is to this song, too.

:/

I have an idea: let's pretend no one cares about song re-use anymore, and see what happens.

Oh noes!! Fannish hive mind strikes again. I look forward to seeing what you do with this. I only know Witchblade from the comics, but there's some really interesting potential there.

Wow, absolutely gorgeous. I'm not a fan of Tom McRae, and I don't really see the Lee/Laura thing so much, either... but you made a believer of me on both counts. Your editing and storytelling and visual artistry are just... unparalleled. This is every bit as flawless, and powerful, as Cold, Cold Water -- which is no small feat. Stunning work. *is floored*

Beautiful work.
Not that I'm the least bit surprised. Once again, I'm wowed by your organic cutting, how unafraid you are of moving between the beats, threading around and through the expected rhythms.

Lovely choices of clips, and a really great stitching of the show's narrative to the song's. Wonderful.

I love the "I don't see/think/follow/ship Lee/Laura, but this!!" comments. How utterly convincing you are. How beautifully realized.

Well, you can't combine one of my favourite shows and one of my favourite artists and expect me not to love it. :D

Seriously, though, this fantastic. You mixed the dark atmosphere and the haunting rhythm of the song with the intensity of the show and got one hell of a vid.

I also adore these little freezes, because they totally add to the tension - I actually held my breath there for a moment - especially the first one at 'welcome back' and then at the swearing in.

Other awesome things: the image of Caprica being destroyed at 'just disappear', the zoom in to Laura at 'I could comfort you', the picture of the Olympic carrier as the highlight of 'couldn't get today out of my mind', Adama's getting shot because I expected it and still didn't see it coming, the build-up from 2:27 till the explosion about 10 seconds later and the image of Kobol(?)/Earth at the end of that sequence and finally that part near the end where Lee points toward the stars followed by that shot coming from the back - I thought that was really cool.

Wow, look at me ramble. :) In conclusion: great vid! More people should vid Tom McRae.

Best Lee/Laura vid ever! :) And even though this wasn't my request, I think you managed to utilize every favorite L/L moment of mine.

What may be your greatest accomplishment here is that, for us shippers, this is very much an L/L vid. But for fans of the show who may like one or both characters and find their relationship interesting but not in *that* way, you've also managed to make a successful Lee *and* Laura vid. It was very easy for me to get in their psyche's and watch this as each's individual story.

As for specifics....

The "I wish I could comfort you" section with the various close-ups culminating in the frozen image of Lee holding the glass of wine - I like how this conveyed that the two have a connection and can feel very much alone/together even when surrounded by others.

"I can't get today out of my mind" and tying it to the Olympic Carrier incident - brilliant! Again, it's a 'them' moment, but it also works as a Lee moment because it told us who he was, while also helping to lay the foundation of who he was yet to become.

This is fantastic. I'm yet another one of those crazy people that doesn't ship Lee and Laura, but this vid is not bothered by silly obstacles like that. ;D

Wonderful mood, the pacing is just completely absorbing, and I love the freezes and blurs. The blend of movement and song dances around their relationship and the unspoken possibilities in a way the show only just barely touched on. It's a beautiful vid. :}

I adore this video. It hits just the right note and captures their relationship perfectly. The clips sometimes fit with the lyrics so beautifully. I've like Tom McRae ever since I saw him supporting Tori Amos, and his albums have been on my amazon wishlist for a while now. I'm in love with this particular song, it fits the vid so well. All in all, a wonderful job.

hell yeah.
Oh my god, there is nothing that is not brilliant about this video. The freezeframes, the blurs, the ships jumping on the beat, the whiteouts on the crescendo, the slow, dreamlike beat of the song, the lyrics that fit, the music that sounds like it was made for the show.

Just amazing all the way around.

I have finally managed to distance myself from the VVC auction vid [info]laurashapiro made for me, with the same song. *g*

Wow! This is beautiful--though it's the same song, the shift in focus makes a huge difference, even though thematically, it's similar. (I don't want to go into great detail while the other vid is still unreleased, of course.) I love the way things keep focusing and unfocusing, and it's a beautiful match to Roslin's arc. Thanks for sharing this.
