Lyrics
My cell is ringing
No ID
I need to know who's calling

My garden's overgrown
I go out on my belly crawling
I got CCTV, pornography, CNBC
I got the nightly news to get to know the enemy

All I want is a picture of you
All I want is to get right next to you
All I want is
your face in a locket
picture in my pocket
take a pill to stop it

I know these fast cars
won't do me no good

I'm going nowhere
where I am it is a lot of fun
Here in the desert to dismantle an atomic bomb
I watch them shadowbox
check the stocks
I'm in detox
Want a lot of what you've got
what you've got can make this stop

All I want is a picture of you
All I want is to get right next to you
All I want is
your picture in a locket
your face in my pocket
take a pill to stop it

I know these fast cars
won't do me no good

Don't you worry about your mind
Don't you worry about your mind
You should worry about the day
that the pain it goes away
You know I miss mine sometimes

There is no fiction
that will truly fit this situation
Documenting every detail
every conversation
I'm not used to talking to somebody in their body
Somebody in their body
Somebody in their body

Thank you to [info]f1renze and [info]fer1213 for looking it over for beta, [info]absolutedestiny for saving my aspect ratio-bacon, and [info]just_eunice for tons of enthusiastic cheerleading. :) Sorry for the enormity of the file size; my source wasn't super-great to begin with (oh FCP, why do you hate avi files so much?) so I wanted to avoid as much quality loss as possible.

All feedback, comments, or concrit are welcome, either here or through email (sdwolfpup (at) gmail (dot) com).

I wish I had some useful feedback to give, but my tired brain can only manage I LIKE IT! Oh, and your editing is really good. Is that constructive? ;-)

YAY Life on Mars!

Great vid, hon. I have a few comments but I'd rather give them in person or via email. I'm leery about giving these particular comments when my first vid hasn't even been beta'd yet.

How's about getting together for coffee or something this weekend?

This weekend is packed full for me already, but I'm free next weekend. Although I'd be interested to hear what you have to say if you want to email your comments! :) And thanks!

Next weekend I have plans on one day, but if I wait that long I'll likely forget what I had to say. ;) I'll email you.

Ooooh, I really liked this. I liked the way the 'you' in the vid kept changing, as did what the cars meant. Very cool.

I was so excited to see you post a LoM vid, then I remembered I still havent had time to watch the last 2 eps (DAMMIT!!!). Can I watch your vid, or should I wait until I've seen everything? (I'm downloading it now, regardless *g*)

(Is ripping from a DVD something easy/free? 'cause I help out, if it is :D)

You should wait until you've seen everything!

Ripping from DVD is free and moderately easy, but the file sizes you get are enormous. Um, I'm gonna email you about something though. Heh.

Oh my God. I rarely - okay, never - leave feedback to vids, through great forgetfullness, but I really had to leave some for this. I loved this. It was every bit as kinetic and mind-bending as Life on Mars is at its best; the song choice was excellent, even though I've never heard a U2 song in my life. The progression was great, and the editing was extremely well done.

See? I'm reduced to feeble gushing. That's one damn good vid.

*flails*

All I needed to see was the song and I was right-clicking so fast my head was spinning. Fast Cars is one of my all time favourite U2 songs and see it vidded to one of favourite shows was like one of those Easter eggs with chocolate inside - double the pleasure.

The vid itself was truly amazing. Especially the clip of car hitting Sam coupled with the "will do me no good" - that I though was perfect. Enjoyed this whole heck of a lot, thank you very much for sharing.

It's wonderful!
God, that *beat* -- it's irresistible, isn't it? and you do such great stuff with it. I love the back-and-forthiness, if that makes any sense, the way your cutting is aligned with the syncopated rhythms. And I love the mood of the vid, the way it's somehow cheerful in spite of everything.

Gah, I have more to say, but ::wibble:: I'm too happy. Must rewatch!

Re: It's wonderful!
The beat was utterly irresistible. It drives and drives and drives and then they just give you that emotional climax where the music changes and becomes all swoony and then the song almost pauses. I love this song. Heh.

Anyhow - yay! I'm so glad you like the vid, thank you so much! And I'm glad that it's still cheerful; I think Sam is more cheerful by the end, so I'm glad that came through.

Very cool--I'm going to have to watch it a few more times, but off the top of my head, I liked the effects, the use of "present day" footage (which I haven't really seen much of so far in LoM vids, aside from Sam getting hit by the car), and the inclusion of Annie. I liked your intercutting--what you chose to juxtapose, the meanings you created. Will there be commentary on this?
The sanest lunatic you've ever met: by catatonic1242: vidding (not shareable[info]sdwolfpup on October 13th, 2006 03:13 pm (UTC)
Thank you! It was actually really fun to use the present day footage; it's very, very different in color and lighting (Sam is more washed out, and the overall feel is not as warm).

I hadn't planned on doing commentary but I'd be happy to.

Wow -- this is just the right combination of relentless and swirly, if that makes sense. Great song choice -- "don't you worry about your mind" indeed. I especially like all the circling motion at the beginning, the jump cuts and little flashy-displacement effects (poor Sam -- so lost!), the way the fast cars go from literal to metaphorical, Sam crumpling the paper, Sam and Gene jumping over the desk to that weird vocal yelp, and the way you cut away just *before* the moment of impact in a couple of shots right near the end (that sense of incompleteness, of things still getting ready to happen).

I'm not sure I'm ever going to be a huge fan of LoM, but wow, it is yielding up some *terrific* vids. Whee!

It was fun to actually have a reason to use flashier effects, I'm glad they worked for you. Thank you for the feedback! :)

I knew this was a gorgeous show, but for some reason this vid is making that hit home more even than the others I've seen.

Love the humor, both the blacker and the more obvious physical stuff. I'd probably pick up even more if I'd gotten around to watching yet. ::hides:: And damn, you make that beat work its ass off! :D And there's that dreamy feeling underlying the song that just fits the premise of the show so incredibly well.

It also builds really beautifully from the frenetic beginning to the dreamier second half, then does a great little pick up tone-wise to the end. It's just so very very engaging on, like, every level. :D

Hee, it's not like you don't have plenty of other things to watch. I'm glad the moments of humor worked; the song has a dry sense of humor so I wanted to play with that a little.

Thank you so much!

You have this vid to thank for getting me motivated to finally finish the series. And I loved both of them so thank you! And yay for it being posted on my birthday too.

I loved the song choice with the driving beat (heh driving=cars) and how you used it so well to show Sam's world. I think it's a law that every LoM vid has to start with the circling shot of Sam but it certainly works here. The "calling" lyric fits perfect and I think the "crawling" clips works really well with the music as it has this frustrated, angry quality to the music. The literalness of the CNBC totally works for me here too, just another thing that's off in Sam's world. I liked how you put a human connection element in "all I want is to get to you" and how that explains Sam's violent actions after the chorus. Nice parallel with Gene being violent as well. Also the whoosh for "fast cars" and its clip matched up so well, so very cool.

The next chorus is really defined by me by Sam putting his hands on the tv, great image to show his desperation along with the rest of the clips. "Fast cars" as almost dying and Sam being on top of the building was a great parallel. I love all the motion clips you used and how throughout the video, you keep the pace of the song. I really liked how you put in the family aspect of Sam's mind in the slower, more emotional part of the vid to show the softer side of the situation. It was great how you show Sam changing with him looking up, first alone and then with Anne and giving the gun to his father, dropping the paper, dropping the gun on Gene and holding Anne's hand. I love that sequence, great turning point for the vid and leads right into Same and Gene working together. My favorite clip was definitely both of them jumping over the desk with the whoo type words, so perfect.

I loved how the end showed Sam getting used to the situation, the lyrics worked really well for the show. And seeing him enjoy his time with Anne, Gene, his dad and his mom made me feel so happy for him, that he finally had some peace. And the ending two clips were perfect, I just knew you were going to use a sky clip :) I definitely loved the vid, so fun to watch and it really sucks me in and let me watch it over and over again.

My goodness, I'm sorry this has taken me so long to respond to! I was so gleeful to receive it, too, so I feel extra-bad for being so slow.

Yay for enjoying LoM! It's a quirky show, but fun and so, so pretty.

I think it's a law that every LoM vid has to start with the circling shot of Sam but it certainly works here

Hee. I had intended to not use that clip very deliberately, but I couldn't find anything else that worked as well! It was annoying to me to have to use it, but I just like it there so much that I'm ok with it now.

I'm happy to hear the turning point worked for you. Really, thank you so much for the fantastic feedback. I'm thrilled! You picked up on things I hadn't even consciously realized. Hee.

Wow. Just...wow. I love your vids, generally, and I love 'Life on Mars,' but this was just exceptional.

The timing was just beautiful: the scenes were put together so that they moved with the song in an emotionally meaningful way, but I love that they weren't literally *following* the beats of the music. (Does that make sense at all? It was a visceral pleasure to see how you made the music and motion fit together but didn't pound home the beats of the song with images, but that's hard to articulate in words.)

Just, wow. I guess that's teh best I can do. Thank you.

That makes perfect sense and I'm really pleased that you mentioned it. I really wanted to get at the speed and off-centeredness of the song without giving in to the repetitive drumbeats, so I'm really happy that worked for you.

Thank you for the wonderful comment!
