Lyrics
A man walks down the street
He says Why am I soft in the middle now?
Why am I soft in the middle?
The rest of my life is so hard
I need a photo-opportunity
I want a shot at redemption
Don't want to end up a cartoon
In a cartoon graveyard
Bonedigger bonedigger
Dogs in the moonlight
Far away my well-lit door
Mr. Beerbelly Beerbelly
Get these mutts away from me
You know I don't find this stuff amusing anymore

If you'll be my bodyguard
I can be your long lost pal
I can call you Betty
And Betty when you call me
You can call me Al

A man walks down the street
He says Why am I short of attention?
Got a short little span of attention
And oh my nights are so long
Where's my wife and family?
What if I die here?
Who'll be my role-model
Now that my role-model is
Gone gone
He ducked back down the alley
With some roly-poly little bat-faced girl
All along and along
There were incidents and accidents
There were hints and allegations

If you'll be my bodyguard
I can be your long lost pal
I can call you Betty
And Betty when you call me
You can call me Al
Call me Al

A man walks down the street
It's a street in a strange world
Maybe it's the third world
Maybe it's his first time around
He doesn't speak the language
He holds no currency
He is a foreign man
He is surrounded by the sound
The sound
Cattle in the marketplace
Scatterlings and orphanages
He looks around, around
He sees angels in the architecture
Spinning in infinity
He says amen! Hallelujah!

If you'll be my bodyguard
I can be your long lost pal
I can call you Betty
And Betty when you call me
You can call me Al
Call me Al

I have a lot I want to say about this vid, but what I'll say outside of the LJ cut is this: THANK YOU to all of the people who participated in bringing it together, for all the many ways you helped. [info]brynnmck (for support), [info]fan_eunice (for squee), [info]heresluck (for nitpicking), [info]pipsqueaky (for the KEY clip change), [info]renenet (for timing and making me breathe), and [info]sisabet (for the summary). You all were so wonderful with your enthusiasm, too, which meant a lot to me. And huge patience thanks to [info]greensilver, [info]tzikeh, and anyone else I forced to watch this vid in the midst of my glee. This was truly a labor of love, and I appreciate your support during it. :)

I don't even remember how this idea hit me, but it was sometime late last year. It was like a bolt of lightning and I hurriedly wrote down all of the ideas I had for it and then set it aside to do IJVP and life stuff but it wouldn't go away. Then I promised myself I would finish it for Club Vivid and started working on it, and as it fell into place I grew more and more in love with it. I realized I wouldn't be able to sit on it until August, which is why I'm posting it now. Heh.

I have never enjoyed making a video more. There was almost no angst involved, and what there was was easily overcome (well, except the angst at the end but that was exhaustion related). I took to calling it my VoJ - Vid of Joy. It's also, of all the vids I've made (except possibly Moving Right Along), the vid that comes most directly from my heart. I want to talk about this vid more than any vid I've made, which is kind of strange since it's pretty straight-forward, I think. Anyway, it was fashioned out of pure love, and I hope that comes through. It's essentially a love letter to DS.

All feedback, comments, or concrit are welcome, either here or through email (sdwolfpup (at) gmail (dot) com).

Oh my gosh. I am here kind of speechless and beaming, having watched this. I can see why it is your Vid of Joy, because there is just SO MUCH to make one happy here! I love RayV, and I love RayK, and I love Fraser -- and wow, it's amazing that all three of them work as well as they do here, because it's hard not to have one verse or something work better than the other, but all of this just *works*. Yaaaaaaaaaaay!

oh my GOD
I am grinning like an absolute LOON here. About halfway through I realized my face had started to hurt from smiling so much!

I can totally tell this comes from the heart, because of the way it touches mine. I didn't think I had this much DS squee left in me.

Thank you, thank you, a thousand times thank you.

So that? That was made of AMAZING!! :o) Seriously, there were SO many things about that which worked for me, but ESPECIALLY the transition between Ray V picking Fraser up off to the ground to Ray K. That pretty much just sums up the whole thing for me in a nutshell! And the song choice was just inspired - I am still smiling over just how PERFECT that they were for everything, especially for Fraser.

And oh hell - I just loved the whole darn thing! OT3 forever!

you had me at RayV in a hot white shirt. God, this is wonderful, you totally got them all, and the lyrics were beautifully fitted to the action without being clunkingly obvious. And I love that you started with the three of them together, making it a triple perspective vid. Beautiful, there isn't enough beaming and flailing in the world for this vid *happysigh*

and FRASER OMFG. SERIOUSLY, it works SO WELL. it's PERFECT. I saw the song and went, "...huh," but SERIOUSLY, you totally made it work, and work PERFECTLY, and this is just entirely made of awesome.

here's luck: fraser[info]heresluck on March 5th, 2007 02:30 am (UTC)
I know I have blithered to you about this vid already, but I am going to blither AGAIN so that you have all the blithering in one place. Um, if you want it. *g*

First, I love the structure -- you're so smart to have seen how perfectly the song maps to these three guys, and I love the way you handled the shift from RayV to RayK on the cymbal at the bridge. And, as I know I've told you, I love the way you keep coming back to certain scenes to tie the whole thing together -- notably the Ray/Ray punch + paper-throwing scene, but also the Volpe Cameo Of Glee.

First verse: Oh Ray -- such a badass, and so totally soft in the middle (kissing his mom! hugging Frannie!). I love the basketball, and not wanting to end up "a cartoon" like his dad, and "get these mutts away from me," and just -- oh, RAY. I love the friendship between him and Fraser that you show in the first chorus, this mix of caretaking and goofiness. The "okay" on "long-lost pal" is just -- ::clutches heart::

Second verse: Oh RAY -- looking at muffins, making faces, getting tangled up in ropes, meeting Volpe in the alley (::dies::). I love the shot of him taking off his glasses on "allegations." I love the door slam. Best use of The Hug ever, and I love the "Vecchio!" wink, and the embrace on "call you Betty," and the badge -- god, the badge makes me grin.

The bridge: You KNOW how much I love the bridge, right? Especially Fraser standing up in court -- that is never not going to crack me up -- and Fraser & RayK sitting up in the car. OMG DORKS.

Third verse: I love the mix of literalism and metaphor here, and the mix of silliness and seriousness. Fraser as "a foreign man" is so perfect -- the literalism of "holds no currency," of course, but also his honesty and decency so out of place in Chicago. He's so pained ("orphanages") and such a goof at the same time, and he touches the lives of everyone he meets, all the angels in the architecture -- I just love that bit -- and, in case I haven't said it enough, that tiny smile on "hallelujah" KILLS ME EVERY TIME.

The Ray/Ray swap on "if you'll be my bodyguard" makes me laugh and say "aww" at the same time -- the crazy Mountie really does need two bodyguards -- and then the parallels between Fraser and his Rays (firing guns! lying on the ground!) are such perfect wrap-up... but I love that you end with Fraser, just Fraser, in his super-shiny Mountie mode, walking off to fight for Truth, Justice, and the Canadian Way.

This vid is joining "Wonder of Birds" and "Goody Two Shoes" on my list of Very Favorite Due South Vids EVER. Whenever I need a pure hit of everything I find charming and moving about the show, I can just watch this vid, because it distills it all into a single three-minute package. It really is a love letter to the whole show. Which... wow. Just wow.

The Vid Of Joy thing comes through so clearly; I am so happy that you made this vid, and that making it was such a good experience for you. And I would love to hear you talk about it, to read any posts you have in you about the process of making it.

This made me grin really a lot--I like the respect and affection that clearly comes through for all three characters.

Specific things I liked:

The basketball bouncing on "shot at redemption"--such a lovely thing for people who know the context (also a nice visual pun on "shot" as in basketball shot).

The pool balls rolling away on the "a cartoon" line. Poor Ray V.

Really, the whole sense through the Ray V. section of the burnout, the sense that he walks through a dangerous world, and he's tired, and Fraser is his link back to wholeness and purity. And this is such a great song for them, that repeated refrain that's about renaming: Fraser becomes "Benny" to Ray, and Ray, in living up to Fraser's expectations about honor, because something different, too.

In the Ray K section, the door closing at around 1:20 fit nicely with the music there.

Ray K. pointing to the badge at 1:35 or so, linking him to Ray V. showing the badge about 30 seconds in, on the repeated refrain about renaming.

The handclasps at 1:40 linking both men to Fraser.

Lots of nice movement on the instrumental section that bridged the Ray K and Fraser section--the guns on the flourish of music at 1:55.

"Maybe it's the Third World" with Fraser being beaten was very powerful.

The movement on "around, around" was nice.

And then...angels in the architecture--oh, I loved that! All these people! And how the third time the refrain comes around, it's not the tight focus on a single relationship, because it's Fraser, of course, who's so many things to so many people, who with someone at his back can do so many astonishing things.
