Lyrics
high strung and poorly hung
i think we're much too young
i hear a sound from your left lung
a melody so beautifully sung

sarcasm spread your wings
oh what sweet joy it brings
'come home' the whole town sings
they will greet us like kings

to everyone’s delight
we crash at the speed of light
so deep in the whitest white
this could have been our burial site

well ok
i am here for the loyalist
i wanna see its face
ok
i am here for the loyalist
this is the nesting place
ok, ok, ok

high strung and poorly hung
i think we're much too young
i hear a sound from your left lung
a melody so beautifully sung

well ok
i am here for the loyalist
i wanna see its face
ok
i am here for the loyalist
this is the nesting place
ok, ok, ok

well ok, ok, ok

All of my gratitude to [info]elynross and [info]greensilver for not only beta'ing the vid but watching the movie for me in the first place. And double thanks to elyn for summary help and reassuring me that the vid wasn't boring in my pre-VVC nervousness. :) All feedback, comments, or concrit are welcome, either here or through email (sdwolfpup (at) gmail (dot) com).

I love, love, love this vid. I need to watch the movie and rewatch it a bunch of times to have some substantial feedback for you, but I just wanted to say here officially that it was my favorite vid in Premieres right behind "Another Sunday" (which probably would've beaten out even a Katee Sackhoff striptease, so, you know). I can't wait to dig deeper into this and discover all the layers and intricacies you wove into it. Thank you so much for making it and sharing it with us.

Thank you so much. I'm so pleased that you liked it even before watching the movie. (And after, too. Heh.)

Hopefully, I will be able to put my thoughts together into more meaningful feedback, but I have to at least tell you that this piece is just beautiful!

Dude! I really want to re-watch this vid when I have enough time to do so, but I can tell you now that I *really* enjoyed the experience of watching it cold during Premieres. It allowed me one of my favorite thrills, that of interpreting a really well-done vid without source knowledge. Thank you for making it and sharing it with us!

Thank you! I'm really glad you were able to get something out of it without knowing the source.

apologies in advance for insane incoherence:

I LOVE YOU! you vidded 'children of men!' when i saw this post i freaked out...i swear. this film rearranged my insides, and made me cry so hard i felt wrung out, and i still went to see it three times. the vid is awesome, i really like the energy and rage of it, and the song is perfect. there are ways you could make a vid of this movie feel slow and contemplative, by using some scenes and not others, but the feel of the film for me is all about forward momentum and the main character's escalating desire to DO SOMETHING, or that specific thing, and your vid really brought that feeling back to me. YOU ARE AWESOME.

The movie really stuck with me after I saw it; I had a very visceral reaction to it. I very much appreciate your comment about the vid - it's not incomprehensible at all! Quite the opposite!

OMG you made a vid on Children of Men. I can't wait to see it - downloading's a bit slow tonight.

Hi! I don't know if you remember me but I've been thinking about you since I've been easing back into BtVS and I just wanted to thank you for being such an awesome teacher when it came to the BtVS fandom and making vids and being so patient with a n00B such as myself. And I just wanted to apologize if I ever stepped on your toes or bothered you too much with my fangirl-ings. Um. yeah. Sorry if this is random. But you're incredibly talented at creating videos that convey feelings and not just a bunch of clips randomly thrown together. :)

*waves* Hi there! Thank you for the comment - I'm really glad that I was able in some way to help you out. :) Vidding is totally worth sharing. :)

It's so beautiful.

Not knowing anything about Children of Men this makes me want to see it. And I can because I got sent it!

I'll try an leave another comment then after.

But I really just wanted to say, I love the creepy feel and the hopeful feel you've got going in this vid. And the creepiness reminds of the music vid in a great way.

Wow, you really got the plot of the movie and all the character motivations into the vid.

And now I get the part where she dragged him off in the hood. At first I thought she was behind them getting sent to the camp and some sort of betrayer.

I saw this vid listed in the program and went, "ROCK ON." Awesome song, awesome concept, and go you for awesomely tackling a movie that pretty much defined "unsettling" and "hard to watch." This vid managed to be a great trailer for the movie without giving everything away or making anyone uncomfortable. High fives!
The sanest lunatic you've ever met: com: protection[info]sdwolfpup on August 20th, 2007 04:53 am (UTC)
Thank you!

It's interesting you mention the whole "giving everything away," actually. I struggled with even how much I showed, but I needed to to specifically say what I was saying in the vid so I came to terms with it. Heh.

I thought I knew this movie eyeballs to entrails and then your vid made it fresh all over again. For which thank you. I love how you use the music to shatter the narrative then let it reform whole from the reflections of all the shards.

Thank you so much. I will talk about it more when I type up my thoughts on the vidshows, but I really enjoyed your vid, too. I love that it had the same feeling but used different scenes to show it.

I haven't seen the film yet so I'm afraid I can't leave any deep thoughts, but I wanted to say I very much enjoyed it, great pacing, and beautiful to look at. :)

Hi, I don't remember exactly how I found your vid, I remember reading somebody made a Children of Men vid and I immediately ran here.

It's hard to watch this material again. I remember when I came home from the theater and devoured all the reviews I'd bookmarked (positive and negative). And then I itched to go see it again, even though the film made me very unsettled. And I watch your vid and it's all coming back to me.

My favorite part of the vid is your portrayal of Theo's journey, from apathetic, disillusioned and given up to a man doing something.

Good work.
The sanest lunatic you've ever met: com: protection[info]sdwolfpup on August 21st, 2007 05:18 pm (UTC)
Yes, I had the same exact reaction to the film when I first saw it - I devoured all of the news on it I could and even though it unsettled me, I wanted to see it again.

Theo's journey, from apathetic, disillusioned and given up to a man doing something.

Oh thank you - this is exactly what I had hoped to achieve. Thank you!

Also, there was another CoM vid that showed at VVC this year. You can get it here: http://aycheb.livejournal.com/57197.html

Oh wow, that was lovely -- great use of the movie and how you framed it within the song, and just visually stunning.

Wow. You manage to take a movie with a lot of external action and violence and not lose sight - even focus more - on the inner character struggle of Theo and his feelings, motivations, etc. within this world. Just beautiful.

Thank you! That's really what I had hoped to do, I'm so happy to hear it worked for you.

i hear a sound from your left lung
Ever since I've watched your vid, I've had this song and certain images in my head. The jump cutting goes great with the music and I like the pace it sets. The fire hitting the car on beat is one of the things I can see in my head when I hear the song. The car door opening, the light flare, the flashes of Moore's character in the yellow light and when the bombing continues after they've left the building are all images from your vid that stay with me. I can't really feedback properly because I don't know how else to say that it stayed with me.

Re: i hear a sound from your left lung
Thank you so much, this is a wonderful comment. I'm really glad to hear not only that it stayed with you, but what in particular. That image of the bombs starting up again when they've left the building is one I retained very strongly from the film, myself.

First off, I've never seen the movie and only know the basic premise. But I did love the vid and getting to rewatch it a few times (and falling in love with the song) I can see how exquisitely edited this is. I love the clips you use to start off the vid with the vivid imagery that helps get the general sense of violence, post-apocalypse world without fertility (thank you, graffitti) feeling to it that sucks you into the vid. I really love how you timed the edits to the music's high pitch guitar sounds and I really like how the stuff people throw at him on the train matches the unrelenting drums in the background. I really like how all the moving vehicles and motion gives you a sense that they always have to keep moving and not stop. And I really like how the external motion goes in the same direction at 0:16. Really pretty transition at :20 with the music as well.

I really like the jump cutting at :22 and how it goes into the pretty motion that gets me settled for the next scenes in the car and how the quick flashbacks (I'm assuming) kind of disorient me into his state of mind. The "melody so beautifully sung" clips are great in terms of matching up with the beauty of pregnancy in this world and narrative understanding. I really love the intercutting in the bus scene that not only works well with the music but shows the push and pull of their relationship and whether they want to be there or not. Same with the kissing sequence with the "joy" showing the personal connection that keeps him going but his expression after still showing he's not quite in yet. I LOVE the irony in "they will treat us like kings" showing the dangers of this kind of world for human nature. The fire crash on the car at :54 with the music was also amazing. I also like how the motion matches with the guitar and how you match the cutting so well with the music while showing the losses and how they affect him.

I love the jump cuts at 1:12 that show the "crash" while showing the disorientation of the character and how worried he is about keeping her alive. All the cutting here and in the great imagery is fantastic. I love how you show all the violence this leads him to carry outright with the music. And I love the effect at 1:28 that goes right into the scene so well with the yellow light. Then I love how you put the loyalist down with the baby which I'm thinking is the human race not to mention the personal connection which you show really well with the yellow flashback of the woman. I love his smile on ok and the smile of the woman which shows how he may relunctantly do this but he is kind of happy to do it. And then I love how you show him coming to terms with her death and getting up. Showing the people's discovery and the crowd around them even as they are really alone in the world with the empty shots which I love how the motion zooms in but not smoothly. The baby video with the music is particularly distinct and sticks with you.

I love the shots of the world you show with it so messed up and the motion in it is great. I love the "world has collapsed" video shot that makes it even more *real*. I really love the soldier shots especially with the religious hand gestures and how you use different clips from different angles to get that afraid of everyone feeling, danger at all sides. I love the explosion shot with the music, very cool and a great lead into the chorus disrupting the paranoid calm. I like how you show he's doing it for them with the "loyalist" clips and how the home scenes give them something to hope for and that sense of normalcy they need as the "missing piece". The shots of the bleeding and still getting hurt show what the cost is so well and him dealing with it with the "ok"s. I love how the clips all have motion going up at 2:45 and the quick shots of the boat work really well. I loove the boat with "Tomorrow" written on it showing the hope but with the final shot being them touching showing the relationship is why he's there and what steadies him. I really enjoyed the vid, "lull" vid or not, it was very impressive and well done. Thanks for making!

Thank you (again) for the wonderfully detailed comment about the vid. I especially appreciate it for this one because I feel really attached to this vid. And I'm so pleased you got so much without having seen the movie. Thanks again!
